In the summer of 2011, I responded to a Yahoo! answers post asking for a header design. I made this woman a design for free. After I saw how happy it made her, I knew I wanted to design more things.
On January 1, 2012, I opened my first Etsy store and started helping Etsians with their shop designs. I was actually really scared to interact with clients before I had started. “How do I even e-mail? What do I say?” “What if they don’t think I’m good?” “What if they find out I’m only 14?!” These were all the questions I was worried about before and when I opened. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I thought I was such a good designer. Looking back, I know now that my initial designs were actually so ugly. But my optimism and naivety back then really helped me persevere and run a pretty decent side job with graphic design.
I learned how Etsy worked, how to sell online, how to communicate with clients, and how to build connections through an online community.
